This past week I used 2 different editing programs for the first time. This is a VERY big deal for me, because I learned to edit and have since edited on the same software, for 11 years! The first one I "decided" to try was Adobe Premiere. I put the word "decided" in quotes because my husband has been suggesting I try this software for some time, and I have resisted. I tend to resist change for the sake of change. Change for a reason, now that's a different story.
Well, this week I got my reason. A client brought me some footage in a file format that I could not import into my beloved AVID. My choice was purchasing some sort of conversion program and then the lengthy process of converting each file, so it could be used in the AVID, or import it directly into Premiere and start learning to edit in there. I chose the latter. I was worried because there was a short deadline on this project, and I was soooo much slower in the new environment. I spent more time than I got paid for, and I had to ask for help a dozen times, but I got it done on time.
The other new experience was more choice than necessity. It was also an Adobe product, actually. We use Adobe Photoshop Elements to organize our photos, and there is an editing function which allows you to make a photo montage with music and transitions. Its a consumer level product, but I wanted to see how it worked, and what the finished product would look like. Doing a still photo project in video editing software is kind of overkill, and therefore more time consuming than it needs to be, I think. Elements was easy to use, with limited functionality. You don't get to make too many of your own decisions. You will see the results of this experiment on Movie Monday.
Overall, in life, I believe change is good. It moves us forward. And these two experiences have done that for me. It feels good to learn something new!
