So, what do you do when you work from home, on your own, trying to run and grow a business, and things go wrong? Who do you ask for help? There is no IT department. There is no head office.
Here is what happened to me in the last few days. The project I have been working on was finished on Wednesday. That is, the editing part was finished. The only thing left, export, convert and send the video files. I know, this can be the most difficult part. And it was. Because of the ridiculous amount of options when exporting and converting, it is a process of trial and error. And because of the enormity of the video files, each trial can take hours.
So, something that would seem to be no big deal, get the files to the client by Sunday evening, became me stressing out Sunday afternoon because the files were still not right, and would take several more hours to convert.
Oh, did I mention that while this was going on, The Little One had a runny nose that needed to be wiped every 30 seconds, a worsening cough and by mid-afternoon, had developed an eye infection? By the time I went to bed last night, at midnight, I had sent 2 of the six files, which were not quite right but better than nothing, and proceeded to spend most of the night soothing a sick toddler back to sleep.
Now, here's the GREAT part of this story. I happen to be extremely lucky because my husband works in the same business as I do, and he also works at home presently. And he is brilliant! Today, while The Little One and I napped, recovery from our long night, my husband put his own work aside, converted all my video files on his computer, checked them to make sure they looked good, and sent them to my client. He sent them to my client! While I was napping! Seriously!?!
Oh, did I mention he drove all over the west side of the city last night looking for antibiotic eye drops? I am not an outwardly mushy person, but I have to say, I feel like the luckiest wife on the planet right now.
Now, not everyone who works from home will happen to have their spouse working at home, who also happens to know everything about their business. The lesson to be gained from this story is to have back-up people. Friends and colleagues who will help you out. People you can trust and turn to when you really need them. And you will, one day, really need them.

Boo for sick kids. But yay for great husbands!! Here's to finished projects and the end of icky germs.
Yay for great brothers! You can feel the love in this story :-) on both your parts. I'm so glad to hear it all worked out, because I can imagine your frustration. I could FEEL your stress about the situation. So glad to hear it ended well.
Oh, I hate exporting video! It's the worst...Thank goodness your husband is so good at what he does. Must feel good to have the project done & delivered!
Each of you picked the right spouse! You both do wonderful work with your lives and your kids (not to mention the wonderful work you both do with your work).
